Going Green

As a responsible member of the global community, the Firm has made a commitment to adopting and implementing environmentally sound policies. In order to further the Firm's efforts to do the most it can to proactively address "green" issues, the Firm's Associates Committee has established a Green Committee consisting of partner and associate representatives to actively explore environmentally friendly initiatives and study the effectiveness of the Firm's existing policies.

Various "green" initiatives are currently being evaluated and several have already been implemented, such as: eliminating the use of Styrofoam™ cups and containers; stocking only recycled-paper writing pads and printer paper made of recycled paper products; modifying existing printers to enable double-sided printing; upgrading existing procedures to facilitate recycling; using environmentally sensitive cleaning products; adopting paperless/electronic pay stubs, adding hybrid vehicles to the Firm's car service; using and re-using recycled plastic bins rather than single-use cardboard boxes for internal moves; re-using previously returned supplies when possible; limiting the provision of bottled water at Firm-catered events; and, communicating Firm-wide with all personnel to encourage conservation and reduced energy consumption. Additionally, Simpson Thacher hosts a variety of programs and events, and works with various organizations to develop and pursue environmentally sound programs and policies. Notably, Simpson Thacher has dedicated a significant amount of pro bono time to helping the environment, from representing Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), one of the nation's leading environmental action organizations, on a pro bono basis in litigation, corporate and other matters since the organization’s founding in 1970 to representing Green Worker, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to developing sustainable worker cooperatives in the South Bronx, in organizing its first worker cooperative.
