Partners Todd Crider and Grenfel Calheiros were quoted in a The American Lawyer article titled, “US Firms Guide Growing Number of Latin American Companies to IPOs,” exploring the increasing number of Latin American-based companies that are choosing to have U.S.-registered IPOs. The article noted how Simpson Thacher has worked on four of the five SEC-registered IPOs out of the region in 2021—two on behalf of issuers and two representing underwriters—one of the top two firms advising on these types of matters this year. Todd explained, “A lot of these companies have cross-border aspirations for growth and the platform that’s supported by public status at Nasdaq or NYSE is really consistent with those ambitions.” When discussing how most of these issuers were from Brazil, Grenfel noted that, “these companies have had their growth accelerated during the pandemic. Their life-cycle of investment has in a sense been expedited and they’re pursuing growth opportunities at this point that may include in a number of cases IPOs.”
