Stephen A. Schwarzman Foundation Awards Grant to World Monuments Fund

06.29.26

The Firm represented the Stephen A. Schwarzman Foundation in connection with the foundation’s grant of over $14 million to World Monuments Fund. The grant will support the major restoration of the decorated surfaces of the west wing of the Second Loggia, known as the Loggia of Raphael, in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, in collaboration with the Governorate of Vatican City State. Conceived by Raphael and decorated between 1517 and 1519 by his workshop for Pope Leo X de’ Medici (1513–21), the Loggia of Raphael was immediately considered one of the highest expressions of Renaissance art applied to architecture. The grant will also support digital imaging of the Loggia, a documentary film documenting the restoration project and a multi-year, internationally accredited training program in wall-painting conservation, led by World Monuments Fund in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, involving hands-on training in Italy, academic coursework in Switzerland and regular visits to the Loggia conservation site.

The gift was announced by Mr. Schwarzman, World Monuments Fund and the Governorate of Vatican City State on Wednesday at a press conference hosted by the Vatican Museums and received media coverage in The Associated Press.

The Simpson Thacher team includes David Shevlin, Maura Whelan and Anne Power (Exempt Organizations).
