Matt Feehily is a Counsel in the London office and acts in relation to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability mandates across a broad range of clients, including private equity firms, project sponsors, portfolio companies and corporations, covering novel and complex legal issues in an emerging area of law and regulation. In particular, Matt provides counsel on the EU and UK regulatory frameworks for sustainable finance and ESG disclosures at product, firm, and company level, including under the EU SFDR, Taxonomy Regulation, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and UK TCFD reporting regimes.

Work Highlights

Experience prior to joining Simpson Thacher includes:

  • Advising on all aspects of UK/EU asset management policy and regulation, delivering regulatory change projects, and providing strategic advice on regulatory policy and advocacy matters and consultation responses.
  • Advising on the new regulatory framework for sustainable finance/ESG.
  • Delivering sustainability disclosures for asset managers under the EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and working with clients to implement ESG policy changes and portfolio-level sustainability data monitoring.
  • Advising on the developing UK TCFD-aligned disclosure regimes for asset managers, asset owners, and corporate issuers.
  • Advising corporate issuers on the developing EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
  • Working with clients to develop approaches to stewardship and engagement under the UK Stewardship Code (securing signatory status) and the revised EU Shareholder Rights Directive.
  • Working with global investment fund trade association and its members on all aspects of UK/EU financial services policy and regulation.

Matt works alongside Simpson Thacher’s market leading Investment Funds Practice and financial services and funds regulatory team, and offers counsel to Simpson Thacher’s transactional teams and clients on ESG related matters from a strategy and implementation perspective.

Matt also regularly contributes to the work of trade associations and industry forums in relation to ESG topics.

Matt received his B.A. Hons. in Law from University of Oxford in 2011 and his PGDip, LPC from The University of Law in 2012. He is currently pursuing an LL.M. in Environmental Policy and Law at University College London. Matt is admitted to practice in England and Wales.
