Morris Massel is Counsel at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP where he is a member of the Bankruptcy Department.  He regularly represents clients in connection with out-of-court restructurings and Chapter 11 cases.  Mr. Massel’s work focuses primarily on advising distressed companies and financial institutions in connection with their loans to troubled companies.  In addition, he also represents acquirers of financially distressed companies in Chapter 11 cases and provides advice regarding the structuring of corporate transactions. 

Mr. Massel has extensive experience representing distressed companies in all aspects of the restructuring process. He has acted as counsel to American Safety Razor Co. and Qimonda Richmond, LLC in connection with their successful Chapter 11 cases. He regularly advises companies regarding restructuring alternatives.  He also advises the Firm’s private equity clients in connection with the restructuring of their portfolio companies.

Mr. Massel also represents JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. and Deutsche Bank as administrative agent for secured lending syndicates in connection with in-court and out-of-court restructurings, including Lifecare Holdings, Envirosolutions, Inc., Readers Digest Association, Inc., R.H. Donnelley Corporation, Simmons Bedding Company and Station Casinos, Inc.  He also was actively involved with and had significant responsibility in the Chapter 11 cases of Adelphia Communications Corp., Werner Holding Co. (DE) Inc., and 360networks. 

Mr. Massel has written extensively on the restructuring process, including for Collier Bankruptcy Practice Advisor and Lexis Practice Advisor on topics such as prepackaged bankruptcies and financing in Chapter 11.

Mr. Massel is admitted to the New York Bar.  He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994 and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the New York University School of Law in 1999, where he was elected a member of the Order of the Coif.
