Mr. Culhane is a Partner in the Firm’s Hong Kong office, and a member of the Firm's Corporate Department.  Mr. Culhane's area of concentration is private investments funds, an area in which the Firm has a preeminent Asian and international presence.  Mr. Culhane has been focused on private funds work in Asia for more than ten years and has advised clients based throughout Asia in connection with the establishment of alternative asset management businesses and platforms and their attendant fund-raising.  His practice includes the representation of both established managers and emerging and middle market managers raising their first funds.  Mr. Culhane’s fund formation work encompasses the range of private equity, special situations and distressed debt funds, venture capital funds, hedge funds and various other private investment structures.  In addition, he has extensive experience with the structuring and negotiation of jointly controlled asset managers and other special situations.  Mr. Culhane has also represented investors and corporations in connection with direct investments, joint ventures and acquisitions.

Mr. Culhane has been recognized as one of the leading private equity fund lawyers in China/Hong Kong in surveys for many years, including most recently Chambers Asia-Pacific (2013), IFLR Guide to the World's Leading Investment Funds Lawyers (2013), The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers (2013) and The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2013).

Since joining Simpson Thacher in 1992, Mr. Culhane has spent significant time in both our New York and Hong Kong offices.  Mr. Culhane returned to the Firm's Hong Kong office from New York in October of 1998.  He has lived, and studied Mandarin, in Beijing, China and Taipei, Taiwan and has conversational Mandarin skills.

Mr. Culhane became a partner in 2002.   He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Williams College in 1988, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa.  He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from New York University School of Law in 1992, where he was elected Order of the Coif.
