Mr. Sarno practices in the Corporate Department of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, focusing on private investment funds and other facets of "alternative asset management." He has represented both domestic and international fund sponsors, such as The Carlyle Group, Lehman Brothers, KKR, Babcock & Brown, ING Group, BlackRock, Brown Brothers Harriman, Cherokee Partners and The Cypress Group, in many different asset categories, including traditional private equity, real estate, infrastructure, mezzanine debt and other fixed income, asset manager investment and coinvestment. Mr. Sarno’s practice also focuses on representing sponsors of fund-of-funds products for clients such as Credit Suisse First Boston and the creation of employee securities companies and listed fund products. Mr. Sarno also represents various hedge fund sponsors, including Citigroup Alternative Investments, Credit Suisse Asset Management, Breeden Capital Partners and Pendragon Asset Management. In addition to representing sponsors in fund formation, Mr. Sarno reviews private fund investments on behalf of private equity investors.

Mr. Sarno practiced in the firm’s London office for two years, where he was involved in international fund formation and investments for clients such as Chase Capital Partners, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, CIBC Oppenheimer and Foreign & Colonial and has been involved in the formation of country-focused funds investing in Italy, Eastern Europe, Russia and Hungary as well as those with a pan-European or Asian focus. Mr. Sarno has also practiced in the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions Group, where he has worked on U.S. and cross-border transactions both public and private, and its Capital Markets Group, where he has worked on domestic and global private placements and registered offerings of debt and equity securities.

Mr. Sarno is a member of the Private Investment Fund Forum, a group comprised of New York City attorney’s practicing extensively in the private funds area, frequently lectures on alternative asset management topics to industry members and advisors and has served on the Industry Committee on Real Estate Fund Secondary Transfers. Mr. Sarno also serves on the Advisory Board of the Private Equity CFO Association. Mr. Sarno is listed as a leading lawyer in Chambers’ Guide to America’s Leading Business Lawyers (Private Equity), The International Who's Who of Private Fund Lawyers, International Financial Law Review’s Guide to the World’s Leading Private Equity Lawyers and other similar publications. He is admitted to the United States District Courts for the Southern District of New York and the District of New Jersey and is a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

Mr. Sarno received his B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Connecticut in 1989, where he was a University Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. with honors from the Duke University School of Law in 1992, where he was the winner of the Hardt Cup moot court competition and the Best Judge award in the Dean’s Cup competition. Prior to joining Simpson Thacher in 1993, Mr. Sarno clerked for the Honorable Justice Robert L. Clifford, Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey.
