Diverse Professionals at Simpson Thacher
Promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels of the Firm enhances our ability to meet the needs of our clients and helps us maintain our leadership role in the legal community.
Our hiring action reflects our words: The 2017 summer associate class was 49% female and 42% diverse.
Our diversity efforts are guided by our Diversity Action Plan, which outlines specific steps to enhance diversity awareness, recruiting, associate development and advancement. Our Diversity Committee of partners oversees our diversity and inclusion programs and receives valuable input from the associates and counsel on our Diversity Advisory Council. But we view recruiting, mentoring and promoting outstanding professionals from diverse backgrounds as the mission of all of our attorneys.
Women Professionals at Simpson Thacher
Simpson Thacher is firmly committed to the advancement of our women attorneys. Gender equality is a broad-based goal, involving recruiting, training, mentoring, promotion to partnership and leadership within the Firm and in the legal community. Our partner-level Womens Committee, in conjunction with our Womens Advisory Council, which is comprised of both associates and counsel, provides strategic direction for our efforts to promote gender equality throughout the Firm.
We elected our first woman partner 47 years ago, one of the first on Wall Street. The Firm now has 40 women partners. Currently, three women partners serve on our Executive Committee, and historically, women have served as Co-Administrative Partner, as Co-Chairs of the Finance, Business Development and Compensation Committees and as department chairs. Our women partners are recognized nationally and globally as practice leaders by Chambers USA, Chambers Global, Chambers Asia-Pacific, The Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation, The American Lawyer, New York Law Journal, California Daily Journal, Crain’s New York Business “40 Under 40,” Euromoney Legal Media Group, IFLR 1000, Law360, The Recorder and Silicon Valley Business Journal.
We cultivate women attorneys as leaders from day one. We offer women’s events and programs for summer and full-time associates, for our departments, the entire Firm, alumni and in coordination with clients and outside organizations.
LGBT Professionals at Simpson Thacher
Simpson Thacher has long been on the forefront of efforts to hire, retain and promote talented LGBT lawyers. We embrace and foster mutual respect for individuals of all backgrounds.
Over the years, the Firm has elected seven openly gay or lesbian lawyers to the partnership. They hold influential positions within the Firm and are recognized as leaders in their fields.
Merit-based advancement is a cornerstone of our culture. On both a personal and a professional level—based on our aspirations and on our record—we believe that members of the LGBT community feel welcome here and are able to thrive. We reach out to LGBT associates from the day they arrive to offer guidance and friendship.
More formally, our LGBT Affinity Group sponsors events to establish a network for associates. Several of our LGBT associates serve on the Firm’s Diversity Advisory Council, which provides input to the Diversity Committee on various Firm initiatives.
