Lawyers of Color at Simpson Thacher

Promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels of the Firm enhances our ability to meet the needs of our clients and helps us maintain our leadership role in the legal community.

Our hiring action reflects our words: 49% of our 2018 summer associate class was female and 38% were law students of color.

Our diversity and inclusion efforts are spearheaded by the Firm's leadership, including our Executive, Diversity, and Women's Committees.  These key groups at the Firm implement intentional and strategic efforts to:  

  1. Attract and recruit the most talent lawyers
  2. Develop every lawyer across all demographics and practice areas
  3. Increase the advancement of women, LGBTQ, and lawyers of color
  4. Foster a community of inclusion where every lawyer can thrive, and
  5. Lead the profession to greater inclusion and representation and strengthen collaborations with clients to maximize impact. 

The partners of our Diverse Committee oversee our diversity and inclusion programs, and engage the entire Simpson community to be part of and contribute to the Firm's efforts.

The Committee receives valuable input from the associates and counsel on our Diversity Advisory Council who actively participate in and contribute to our inclusion efforts.  We believe that recruiting, mentoring, and promoting outstanding professionals from underrepresented backgrounds is the mission of all of our attorneys. 

Female Lawyers at Simpson Thacher

Simpson Thacher is firmly committed to the advancement of our female lawyers. Gender equality is a broad-based goal, involving recruiting, training, mentoring, promotion to partnership and leadership within the Firm and in the legal community. Our partner-level Women's Committee, in conjunction with our Women's Advisory Council, which is comprised of both associates and counsel, provides strategic direction for our efforts to promote gender equality throughout the Firm.

We elected our first female partner almost five decades ago, one of the first at a major New York firm. The Firm now has 38 female partners. Currently, three female partners serve on our Executive Committee, and historically, women have served as Co-Administrative Partner, as Co-Chairs of the Finance, Business Development and Compensation Committees and as department chairs. Our female partners are recognized nationally and globally as practice leaders by Chambers USA, Chambers GlobalChambers Asia-Pacific, The Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation, The American LawyerNew York Law Journal, California Daily Journal, Crain’s New York Business “40 Under 40,” Euromoney Legal Media Group, IFLR 1000, Law360, The Recorder and Silicon Valley Business Journal.

We cultivate female attorneys as leaders from day one. We offer women-focused events and programs for summer and associates, for our departments, the entire Firm, alumni and in coordination with clients and outside organizations.


LGBTQ Professionals at Simpson Thacher

Simpson Thacher has long been on the forefront of efforts to hire, retain and promote talented LGBTQ lawyers. We embrace and foster mutual respect for individuals of all backgrounds.

Over the years, the Firm has elected seven openly gay or lesbian lawyers to the partnership. They hold influential positions within the Firm and are recognized as leaders in their fields.

Merit-based advancement is a cornerstone of our culture. On both a personal and a professional level—based on our aspirations and on our record—we believe that members of the LGBTQ community feel welcome here and are able to thrive. We reach out to LGBTQ associates from the day they arrive to offer guidance and friendship.

More formally, our LGBTQ Affinity Group sponsors events to establish a network for associates. Several of our LGBTQ associates serve on the Firm’s Diversity Advisory Council, which provides input to the Diversity Committee on various Firm initiatives.
