Women’s Committee

The development and advancement of female lawyers remains one of the Firm’s most important priorities.
In 2006, Simpson Thacher formally established the partner-level Women’s Committee to monitor the progress of the Firm’s female lawyers, launch programs to develop female lawyers, ensure that female lawyers are fairly represented in the highest ranks of Firm management and address any unique issues that may impact them disproportionately.
“The Women’s Committee counts among its members some of the most influential partners at the Firm. It’s a serious committee that is dedicated to providing female lawyers with the support they need to reach their highest potential.”
--Laura M. Twomey, Personal Planning Partner and former Co-Chair of the Women's Committee

To ensure we take into account the full range of ideas and perspectives of our female lawyers, the Firm’s Women’s Committee works very closely with the Women’s Advisory Council, which is comprised of female counsel and associates. Together, the Women’s Committee and the Women’s Advisory Council provide strategic direction to our efforts to promote gender equality throughout the Firm.

Among other initiatives, the Women’s Committee and the Women’s Advisory Council sponsor a wide array of programming geared specifically towards female lawyers. Recent events have included:

  • Gathering of U.S.-based female associates and counsel to network and engage female partners in conversation over an intimate dinner. This biennial event gives our female attorneys a chance to socialize with other women across practice areas and also includes a happy hour with male partners who sit on the Firm’s Executive and Women’s Committees;
  • Women's Forums featuring speakers on relevant professional development topics, such as: effective communication, women in technology, a panel discussion highlighting the Firm’s female leaders, and a panel of women general counsel who offered advice for building client relationships
  • Practice Advancement Conversations” (PACs) are designed to create a greater sense of community and foster informal mentoring. “PACs” are specifically created for female associates and counsel and hosted by female partners in the Firm’s various practice groups. The PACs address substantive career development issues, as well as the building of both soft and hard skills in the practice of law; and

  • Associate-led Lean- In Circles featuring inspiring guest speakers such as best-selling authors, leadership coaches, the Dean of Columbia Law School, senior legal counsel at Google and at Survey Monkey, as well as roundtable discussions with Simpson Thacher partners.

In addition to professional events for female lawyers, the women partners frequently host lunches and informal social gatherings for women associates and counsel. These get-togethers foster a spirit of collegiality and camaraderie among our female lawyers.
