Simpson Thacher was a lead sponsor for the Markets Group’s 11th Annual Private Equity Latin America Forum held in São Paulo on December 9-10. The forum brings together investors, funds and advisors to discuss topics including sectors, due diligence and private equity investment opportunities in Latin America and around the world. Partners Grenfel Calheiros, Todd Crider, Juan Naveira and Jaime Mercado represented the Firm.
Todd Crider, Co-Head of the Firm’s Latin America Practice and Co-Chairman of the conference, gave both the opening and closing remarks, as well as moderated two panels. The first panel discussion, titled “Middle Market & Growth Investing,” focused on how, in the crowded private market, middle market investors and GPs can align their strategies to optimize returns. The second panel was titled “Macroeconomic Outlook on Latin American & Global Financial Markets” and included chief economists from major banks who shared their outlooks on the global macro economy, and how Latin America compares to the rest of the world.
Partner Jaime Mercado led the keynote interview titled, “The Future of Brazilian Infrastructure,” which consisted of a fireside chat with Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, the Brazilian Minister of Infrastructure. Jaime also moderated a panel discussion titled, “Private Investing in the Latin American Food & Beverage Industry,” which examined the increased interest from private and institutional investors in Latin America’s growing food and beverage sector.
In addition, Partner Grenfel Calheiros moderated a keynote panel titled, “Biggest Opportunities & Challenges Facing Latin American Private Equity,” which focused on the unique landscape facing Latin American private equity and the strategies for navigating region-specific obstacles.
Partner Juan Naveira also participated in several discussions, including leading a break out session titled, “LatAm Portfolio Companies Accessing US Capital Markets,” as well as moderating two panels titled, “Latin America Investor Roundtable” and “Exit Strategies in Latin America.”
