07.17.25

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced today that Partner Richard Hanson has joined the Firm’s London office where he will focus on securitization and structured products.

“Clients are increasingly seeking cutting-edge and multifaceted financing solutions to address a wide variety of financing needs,” said Nicholas Shaw, head of Simpson Thacher’s London finance and capital markets group. “Rick’s extensive experience in the development of securitization and structured products will enhance our European finance and capital markets capabilities and further strengthen our market-leading U.S. securitization practice.”

Rick advises alternative investment funds, asset managers and insurance companies on complex structured products. He represents borrowers in funding structures backed directly and indirectly by commercial real estate (CRE) debt, direct lending/leveraged loans, distressed, non-performing debt and re-performing debt as well as a range of other esoteric asset classes.

His practice incorporates all types of private structured credit solutions for asset managers, with experience in back leverage both in U.S. and European structures. Rick has been consistently ranked as a leading securitization lawyer by Legal 500 since 2016 and was named a leading lawyer by Thomson Reuters in 2023, 2024 and 2025. He joins from another international law firm.

“Rick’s experience and deep understanding across each of the investment funds, real estate, energy and infrastructure markets makes him an excellent complement to our robust corporate team in London,” said Wheatly MacNamara, European Managing Partner at Simpson Thacher. “Rick’s move follows a number of recent London finance and capital markets hires, including leveraged finance partners Bryan Robson, Dan Peach and Will Gwyn, who joined the Firm this year.”
