Anuj Shah advises on cross-border financing transactions throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He represents a range of private equity firms, their portfolio companies, financial institutions, private credit funds and corporate borrowers on acquisition and leveraged finance, real estate finance, infrastructure finance, funds finance, back-leverage transactions and other corporate finance transactions. Anuj has frequently advised institutional clients such as KKR, Blackstone and SoftBank, among others.

Anuj Shah is Counsel in the Firm’s Asia Banking and Credit Practice, based in Hong Kong. Anuj advises on cross-border financing transactions throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He represents a range of private equity firms, their portfolio companies, financial institutions, private credit funds and corporate borrowers on acquisition and leveraged finance, real estate finance, infrastructure finance, funds finance, back-leverage transactions and other corporate finance transactions. Anuj has frequently advised institutional clients such as KKR, Blackstone and SoftBank, among others.

Among his representative matters, Anuj has advised:

  • KKR (and its portfolio companies) in connection with multiple financings including its:
    • $650 million investment in Vinhomes, the largest real estate developer in Vietnam
    • NT$47.8 billion (US$1.56 billion) take-private of Taiwan’s LCY Chemical Corp., which was named a 2019 deal of the year by Asian-mena Counsel, FinanceAsia and IFLR 
    • INR15.54 billion (US$204 million) acquisition of five Indian solar energy assets (with capacity of 317MWp) from Shapoorji Pallonji Infrastructure Capital
    • PHC Holdings (f/k/a Panasonic Healthcare) in its approximately US$1.14 billion acquisition of the Anatomical Pathology business of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
    • Acquisition financing of Woodland Pre-Schools in Hong Kong by KKR’s portfolio company Cognita Schools
  • ChemChina on a US$5.5 billion refinancing in connection with its take-private acquisition of Syngenta AG

  • Various private equity sponsors on their net asset value (NAV) financings and hybrid variations provided as aftercare facilities for funds that are later in their life cycles with less uncalled capital and more portfolio asset value
  • Various private equity sponsors on back-leverage financings supported by fund level equity commitment letters

Prior to joining Simpson Thacher in 2017, Anuj worked in the London and Hong Kong offices of a Magic Circle law firm. His work prior to joining Simpson Thacher includes advising:

  • Redview Capital and Asia-IO on the acquisition financing for optical communications technology provider Source Photonics
  • Global Infrastructure Partners on its refinancing for the acquisition of Edinburgh Airport
  • The arrangers of the refinancing of Sanpower’s acquisition of House of Fraser (British department store chain)
  • The arrangers of the acquisition financing for AVR Afvalalverwerking B.V. (Dutch waste disposal business) by Cheung Kong Infrastructure (CKI)
  • An international bank on the debt restructuring for Mongolian Mining Corporation
  • Liquidators in connection with their claims in the debt restructuring for China Fisheries Group
  • The arrangers of various art financings, with custody arrangements for high value art as collateral

Beginning in 2021, Anuj also spent nearly a year on secondment at KKR in Hong Kong, where he advised on a wide variety of financing transactions.

Anuj is passionate about diversity initiatives and has served as a member of the Firm’s Diversity Advisory Council since 2018. He is also a member of the Fund Finance Association’s Asia-Pacific Diversity Committee.

Anuj graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 2009, where he received his LL.B. with first class honors. He is a dual-qualified solicitor in England and Wales and Hong Kong, commencing his career in London before relocating to Hong Kong in 2015.
