Head of Simpson Thacher’s Latin America Practice, Todd Crider, was featured in a LexLatin article titled, “Guatemala, Brazil and Peru – the nuances of corruption.” The new study, published by the Lawyers Council for Civil and Economic Rights, of which Todd is a founding member, of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, rates the legislative efforts of eight Latin American countries to combat corruption based on three interrelated metrics: the strength of anti-corruption legislation in each country, its implementation, and ultimately, the will or ability of the executive authorities in each country to enforce such legislation.
In the article, Todd noted that while pursuing an anti-corruption agenda in Latin America is challenging in the best of times, the exceptional measures implemented to combat the COVID-19 pandemic have set back progress. “In addition to the election of populist presidents with little real interest in strengthening effective institutions and the rule of law, the coronavirus crisis has cut off any favorable anti-corruption trend [in the Latin American region],” Todd said.
Todd currently serves as an executive committee member and previously served as the founding chair of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice. The Vance Center advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession. Through the Vance Center, Todd also serves on the executive committee of the Pro Bono Network of the Americas and was a founder of the Lawyers Council for Civil and Economic Rights.
