Simpson Thacher Attorneys to Present at Conference on Representing & Managing Tax-Exempt Organizations

Several Simpson Thacher attorneys will be speaking at Georgetown Law’s Annual Conference on Representing and Managing Tax-Exempt Organizations on April 23-24 in Washington, D.C. Partners in the Firm’s Exempt Organization Practice David Shevlin, John Bennett and Maura Whelan, and Jennifer Franklin, Senior Counsel in EO, along with Raphael Prober, Partner in the Firm’s Congressional Investigations Practice, and Alexander Franchilli, Counsel in the Firm’s Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice, will present at the conference, which brings together attorneys, nonprofit leaders and advisors to explore practical and regulatory challenges facing the sector. Through a series of panels and discussions, the program examines developments in governance, compliance, advocacy, investigations and emerging risk areas affecting tax‑exempt organizations.

Head of the Firm’s Exempt Organization Practice, David Shevlin, will participate in a roundtable titled “Practitioners Respond: A Roundtable Discussion on Federal and State Priorities,” which will address legislative, regulatory and enforcement developments affecting the tax‑exempt sector.

Raphael Prober, Co-Head of the Firm’s Congressional Investigations Practice, will speak on a panel titled “Congressional Investigations: What to Know, How to Engage and Who to Call,” which will discuss best practices for preparing for and managing congressional inquiries.

John Bennett, Head of the Firm’s Endowment Advisory Practice, will speak on a panel titled, “Impact Investing Fiduciary Engagement: Investment Oversight, Portfolio Construction and Other Key Considerations,” which will explore fiduciary obligations, prudence considerations and portfolio construction in the impact investing context.

Maura Whelan will speak on a panel titled “Political Engagement: Doing It Right (When It Can Be Done at All),” which will examine the legal framework, limitations and risks associated with political engagement by tax‑exempt organizations.

Jennifer Franklin will speak on a panel titled “Family Offices and Multi Entity Structures: Navigating Form, Conflicts, Co-Investing, and Self-Dealing,” which will examine regulatory, governance and structuring considerations for complex family office arrangements.

Alexander Franchilli will speak on a panel titled “Charities in the Digital Age: Data Privacy at Home and Abroad,” which will address data privacy considerations for charities operating in the United States and internationally.
