Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP today announced that Steven Lorch has joined as a Partner in the Tax Practice, where he will focus primarily on energy and infrastructure transactions. He is based in the Firm’s New York office.

“Tax considerations play a critical and increasingly sophisticated role in energy and infrastructure matters, particularly in the renewable energy space,” said Alden Millard, Chair of Simpson Thacher’s Executive Committee. “As legal demand for these transactions grows, the Firm continues to invest in top talent to meet our clients’ needs across the full spectrum of energy and infrastructure transactions, ensuring the deals are optimized to maximize efficiency. Steven’s deep experience expands our ability to deliver comprehensive, 360-degree tax advice.”

“Steven’s significant expertise in the energy and infrastructure tax sector across a range of transactional matters, including M&A, joint ventures and financings, will further expand our ability to advise on the critical overlay of tax considerations and infrastructure matters, and we are excited to welcome him to the Firm,” said Marcy Geller, Co-Head of Simpson Thacher’s Tax Practice.

“Simpson Thacher has continued to invest heavily in its energy and infrastructure capabilities, with Steven following multiple other lateral hires since the beginning of the year across our offices in Houston, London, New York and Singapore. This growth bolsters our ability to deliver integrated, end-to-end advice to clients investing in energy and infrastructure projects, including those where tax credits and structuring are critical components,” said Eli Hunt, Co-Head of the Firm’s Energy and Infrastructure Practice.

Steven advises a broad spectrum of market participants on the U.S. tax aspects of energy and infrastructure transactions, with a particular focus on renewable power, energy transition, conventional energy, and data center and fiber assets. Steven regularly advises clients on complex tax equity structures, pre-tax preferred investments and tax credit transfers in connection with U.S. investment and production tax credits. He also advises project owners and developers on the U.S. tax aspects of renewable power and clean energy project development, including with respect to engineering, procurement and construction agreements, build transfer agreements, equipment supply agreements, and general eligibility for U.S. investment and production tax credits, including compliance with prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements and requirements for bonus credits.

“I am delighted to join Simpson Thacher, whose industry-leading Tax and Energy and Infrastructure teams are known for handling some of the most complex, high-profile transactions in the energy space and beyond.
