Peter Thomas Quoted in China Business Law Journal on Chinese Investment Forecast

10.03.14
Simpson Thacher Litigation Partner Peter Thomas was recently quoted in the China Business Law Journal in an article about the current and future state of China’s outbound investments, including to the United States.  Although the recently volatile investment climate for Chinese companies in the US appears to be improving—as reflected in the success of acquisitions such as those of Smithfield and IBM’s low-end server businesses—the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is expected to continue to apply careful scrutiny to proposed Chinese investments.  Peter remarked “it is no secret that there is some trepidation in US society, and among US politicians, about China’s growing economic clout, especially when manifested by direct investments in US assets.”  Peter has represented several Chinese firms in CFIUS reviews and represented Smithfield in connection with CFIUS’s investigation of its proposed acquisition last year.
