Eric Geffner, Co-Head of Simpson Thacher’s Sports group, was profiled in a Sports Business Journal article titled, “Eric Geffner emerges as a leading deal lawyer for women’s sports and beyond,” which detailed his role as a top lawyer in the sports sector. The article noted that one of Eric’s areas of focus is on women’s sports, including serving as legal advisor for Angel City FC, with Julie Uhrman, co-founder of Angel City FC, explaining that “I never have to wonder whether Eric is telling me what I want to hear, or what he actually believes. He helps me get to what I’m really trying to accomplish.” Meanwhile, Brett Scharback, Chicago Cubs senior vice president and chief legal officer, highlighted Eric’s strong industry experience and relationships, noting that he is “…able to say, ‘I’ve seen this before,’ or ‘I’ve come across this in a similar circumstance and here are two, three, four creative ways to solve this.’” Eric explained that Simpson Thacher “has one of the most premier private capital and M&A platforms, and just this built-in list of the top private equity firms in the world who are interested in getting into sports.” He further noted that “Building something on a platform like this with the people I started it with, and then having the kind of institutional framework and breadth of expertise that they have here, was just an incredible combination.” With reference to what draws him to the sports, media and entertainment industry, he said that “I always liked technology and new media, which are always advancing and changing.” “It’s just that sport brings people together, which obviously is a beautiful thing, especially in the world today. It transcends all boundaries,” he said.
