Simpson Thacher was ranked second among the most active international law firms practicing in Latin America for 2024 by deal volume (overall number of deals), according to Latin Lawyer’s “Deal Tracker Report: 2024 Year in Review.” The Firm was recognized for advising on 66 deals in 2024, including on Liverpool’s $6.25 billion acquisition of Nordstrom, the second-largest transaction in Latin America during the year. The Firm also ranked among the top five international law firms with the highest combined value for Latin American deals in 2024, advising on $36.7 billion worth of deals during that time.
Partner Juan Francisco Méndez was recognized as the most active international law firm partner in Latin America in 2024. Partner Paulo Cardoso was also included among the top 10 most active partners in the region. Senior Counsel Kirsten Davis was recognized as the most active international law firm counsel or associate in 2024, and Associates Isaac Cattan, Jon Vicuña and Laura Ribero were also included among the top 10 most active counsel or associates.
Todd Crider, Head of the Firm’s Latin America Practice, was also quoted in the report on dealmaking trends in the region. Todd noted that, “Despite the downturn of the past few years, we continue to see deals happening throughout the region and are optimistic that M&A will face a more favourable environment in the second half of 2025 and into 2026.” He further explained how “amid fluctuating market conditions, rising interest rates regionwide and the cost of local debt increasing, companies have been prompted to look towards the U.S. dollar and the cross-border market.” Commenting on the outlook for the region going forward, Todd stated that the energy and infrastructure sectors “will remain significant growth drivers, with a particular focus on data centres and digital transactions, as well as transactions focused on supplying the necessary energy to data centres.”
